The Birth Of The Arcade

The Birth Of The Arcade

When the concept of the site was born, how did the conversation go? What was the original story?

Legend has it that Next Generation Online held a contest on their site to find a cartoonist, and we sent in so many entries that they told us to stop. Eventually we found a site to piggyback the comic on, then moved it to its own site, and shortly after that I believe Gabriel retrieved a sword from a stone and became king of the Britons.

I honestly don't remember how much of this story is true anymore. It's been almost eight years now; my memory of these events is almost completely merged with my almost nightly World of Warcraft sessions. I think we might have fought a Gryphon at some point.

How similar, if at all, are you to your comic counterparts?

The basic characteristics are quite similar. We try not to murder each other in real life, as "tough stains" would inevitably result. Most strips are either actual conversations or modeled closely on them, though.

At what point did you realize that you had something bigger than just a blog/webcomic on your hands, and that the game industry was paying attention?

The first time we went to E3, I would suppose. We hadn't been doing it very long yet, seven months or so, and someone recognized the names on our badges. We weren't quite ready for that. We liked our Internet Anonymity just fine, thank you.
